This is a touchy subject. I don't want to be that nasty british judge off that one show, but at the same time, not everybody will be successful in a band.
An outside opinion is always best. Ask someone who doesn't love you. Ask some stranger. Your family and your friends usually will want to support you, even if they wouldn't like you if they didn't know you.
Also, go to auditions, and don't take them personally. Any audition director will probably be cranky, having sat through a thousand bland renditions of very similar material, one after the other. Try to be unique with your selections for audition.
On the other hand, if you go to twenty auditions and they all say the same thing then maybe you should listen.
