Music Festival Market Research part 2: Brands, Sponsors, and Vendors

Posted On 2010-01-22 , 9:53 AM

Music Festival Market Research

Imagine a world music festival featuring Ani Difranco, Ben Harper, and Rusted Root – sponsored by Walmart and Pfizer.

Oh… you can’t?

For a sponsor, music festival market research is imperative. You must know your audience. Know what they like, and what they don’t like. Otherwise, you risk losing money, losing the trust of your target audience, and losing face in your very competitive advertising market.

Marketing week covered this topic very astutely, in their article about music festival market research.

“Many different sectors choose to associate with music festivals, but those with the most potential for success are alcoholic drinks, with 75% of festival goers spotting booze ads at festivals and 77% believing alcohol brand advertising would work best at festivals. Fashion brand advertising has been spotted by 36% of those attending festivals and 41% believe this kind of advertising would work best in a festival environment.”
Music festival market research shows that 44% of those questioned said attending a music festival was the most exciting thing they had ever done. This fever-pitch emotional high puts consumers in a much more open mind-state. They are much more willing to spend money to memorialize the occasion.

Buying food, drink, and merchandise is an integral part of event celebration, road tripping, and all the other reasons people would be so excited to be at a music festival. Add to that the fact that music glamorizes certain purchases, including alcohol and apparel, and you have the perfect opportunity to promote your brand.

Brands and sponsors can cash in on this, if they do it responsibly. Sectors that are not right for the music festival market, research the sales that occur and may be tempted to butt in. For example, car, insurance, and banking sponsors would be completely out of place to music festival-goers. Music festival market research makes it apparent that brands such as X-box, considered something that keeps people indoors, would be seen in a negative light at an outdoor festival.

In spite of the profits to be made, a sponsor must fully understand the market research of the music festival to benefit from the festival spirit.

When you think you've done all you can do...

When you are thinking "I have done everything I could possibly do to market my music..."

Remember that it doesn't matter that you have already done one particular thing to market yourself. Do it again. Do it regularly.  There is so much going on nowadays that you have to do the same darn thing about 5 times before someone sees it.

If you want 5000 people to see it...

Market Research for a Music Festival Part 1

For music lovers, attending a music festival is the most exciting thing, short of a private audience with their favorite musician. With a bit of market research, you can give that feeling to the people attending your music festival (which reflects very well on your festival!).

Market research for a music festival can be very simple if you have the correct tools.

Music festival market research essential questions:

1. Who is searching for what you have? Determine the demographic of your music festival
2. Where are those people spending their time? Research where to market your music festival
3. What bands/musicians appeal to your demographic? Find bands by genre and preview their music

Today we will focus on part 1, market research to determine the demographic of your music festival.

1. Who is searching for what you have?

Determine the demographic of your music festival

There are many tools that can show you demographic information for a specific genre. If you are doing market research for a music festival that will feature country music, you will need to know who is searching for terms related to country music.

First, go to Google. Google Insights will show you what people are searching for at Google, including a graph of interest in that phrase over the last four years.

Second, use a demographics tool like the one here from MSN Adcenter. My favorite tool for this (from technobloggie) has been offline for the last few days, so here is the second choice.

Third there is a search funnel tool that shows what people were searching for before and after they search for your chosen search term.

Fourth, this market research tool from Quantcast will show you demographic information for a specific website.

"What now?" Checklist

Posted On 2009-09-24 , 12:01 PM

Have you ever said to yourself "I've done everything I can... What now?"

So here is a list of things you can do to promote your music and get more fans (and hopefully sell some CDs, because I know you are pretty strapped for cash...)
  1. Get your music to radio stations - Call up your local stations (all of them within your genre, especially college radio stations) and ask for the Music Director or Program Director. Try and get an appointment with them, and give them a copy of your CD. It should look professional and unique (including a jewel case so it doesn't get lost in their papers, and ideally your cover art) and ask yourself "how can I not piss these guys off?" because they sift through a lot of these types of requests. Be punctual, polite, and tell them why your songs will make people want to listen to their radio station.
  2. Hand out tons of posters for your shows - It's easy to do, especially if you can just shrug it off when people get mad at you.
  3. Get paid advertising - Myspace, Facebook, Stumbleupon, and Jango radio, and many other sites offer paid advertising that is targeted to people searching for a specific phrase, or in a specific area. Big artists are ALWAYS doing this - that's why you see their picture and an ad for their new album all over myspace.
  4. Use social networks and create a website to sell your music from - Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, and your personal website can be used to sell your music. Just make sure it is clean and well organized, easy to use, and make it look professional. Having professional looking pictures and good grammar can go a long way - it's all about the first impression, especially online.
  5. Get out there and talk about yourself!  Don't be afraid to let people know you are an artist, and let them know where they can hear your music (a short, easy to remember domain name is best).  It's free, and only costs you some adrenaline (if you are shy). Make sure you can describe your music - people won't care about your music if you say 'it's awesome'. They may take some time to listen if you describe what your music actually sounds like, what instruments, what genre, how the music makes you feel, etc.  This information can help get their interest.
  6. Meet other artists - They know things you don't, and it is always good to network. Keep a book where you can write their name, what they do, how you met them, and any other info that will be good to know next time you talk to them. Networking is easy if you stay organized, and remember people's names. Writing it down is a good way to do that.
So get out there and do something! Check back for more tips and lists!
